--------------------
Can you help please?
I am about to make up a copy of Richard Gideon's Solar Sun Tracker and have all the parts ready. I have also designed a PCB to contain all the 9 volt part of the circuit.
There is a problem with part C3 which is shown as a capacitor of value 1000uF.
The schematic indicates a ceramic capacitor but I think this is an error. A capacitor of 1000uF is more likely to be an electrolytic type.

Richard's article was illustrated on this web site in April 2005

Is my thinking correct?

You are correct that is wrong. Unless of course you just happen to have a super gigantic size ceramic capacitor lying around.

Hint: When turning on circuit for the first time, leave that capacitor out of the circuit. This will eliminate the time delay it provides thus making it quicker to check out the rest of the circuit to see that everything is working.

Now below is the latest and greatest version of the schematic.

The main change is the relay contact wiring is greatly simplified. (Sometimes the incredibility obvious is hard to see.)

Also the relays are now driven by a “darlington pair of transistor” to insure a more reliable turn on.

Revised schematic 2-25-07, changed values of RV1, R15, R29, & R30.
